What is Real Skincare?
Hmpp …. what do you mean?
As a trained chemist/biodchemist turned professional esthetician (aka beautician), I constantly try to seek the answer to ‘What is real skincare? What if we don’t put skincare? What is the most natural way to achieve heatlhy, balanced skin for my clients?’
And after 10 years, I think I found the answers. Curious to find out too?
Let’s start with understanding the skin structure.
Skin is made up of 3 main layers ~ epidermis, dermis and hypodermis.
Epidermis is the outer most layer, forming a protective layer over the body’s outer layer. Keratinocytes form 95% of the cells and the remaining is made of Melanocytes (responsible for the color of the skin) and Langerhans (immunity).
Dermis, beneath the epidermis layer consists of connective tissue including collagen and elastin, embedded in hyaluronic acid and protein. It also contains nere endings, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, hair follicles, sweat glands and sebaceous glands.
Hypodermis, also known as subcutaneous skin helps to attach the skin to muscles and bones. It consists of connective tissue and fats which provides cushion and insulation.
Having understood the basics on the skin structure, we know the skin is capable of creating all the structure to keep it looking supple, glowy and youthful. So, what is the reason we put skincare? Why?
The REAL SKINCARE is really our own water-oil balance in the skin. How to stimulate your skin to keep you in optimum condition.
For maturing skin (which is all of us actually), the secret is to boost your metabolism via cardio-based exercise and deep breathing exercise. Examples of cardio-based exercise includes High intensity workout, jogging, tennis, table tennis, dance. Examples of deep breathing exercise includes yoga, tai chi, chi-gong and meditation. This is what we mean by Yin (soft) and Yang (hard) exercise to balance the chi (energy) in our body.
Coupled with a balanced diet, clean lifestyle with enough sleep, our body is designed to keep every cell in our key organs especially liver, heart, pancreas, stomach and lungs healthy… and the effect, the soft glow and pink undertone on the face.
Then, why does Tng Beauty propogate using skincare supplements if the Real skincare is in fact our own skin ‘engine’? The reason: Whilst it is ideal to have daily workout of an hour, a high protein and low sugar diet with 2 liters of water and 8 hours of sleep, many could not keep to that routine. Hence, skincare becomes a supplement.
And guess what, a good lifestyle coupled with our skincare recommendation, we can keep our clients looking 5- 20 years younger than their chronological age. Don’t get us wrong. We, at Tng Beauty celebrate life including all the finelines and spots that come with it. But many of us are idealist who love to have the cake and eat it too.
If we can look good in a natural way, only 15 minutes in the morning and in the evening, why not? But don’t forget to give yourself 1 hour in the morning for a power workout or some great yoga/meditation!
