A common question asked “Do I need to exfoliate my skin?”. If yes, how often and what do you need to take note of.
Weekly or bi-weekly exfoliation (or what most people refer to as scrub or peel) is a good practice as it helps to remove the dead skin cells from the surface and skin is now well prepared for penetration of serum, essence or ampoule as skincare tonic.
However over-exfoliation leads to irritation, redness, dehydration and worst still, sensitive skin or even eczema.
So, lets dive into the different types of exfoliators ~ granular, chemical or enzymatic exfoliators?
Granular Exfoliant: The most common type of physical exfoliant is granular scrub. They contain kernel like nut shells, fruit pits, ground coffee, flaxseed, sunflower seed or sugar but it can be harsh on the skin. One example of granular exfoliant is Maria Galland Scrub 41.
Chemical Exfoliant: This type of exfoliant helps to dissolve the ‘glue’ that hold the skin cells together. The most common types of chemical exfoliant contains glycolic acid or lactic acid or salicylic acid. Whilst many believe glycolic peel is suitable for even sensitive skin but due to its efficacy, it is important to take precaution of sun protection skincare after the peel. Eg. of Chemical Exfoliant is Jyunka Epidermal Peel.
Enzymatic Exfoliant: This type of exfoliant helps to breakdown the proteins. The dull and rough outer skin contains Keratin protein. Eg. of Enzymatic Exfoliant is Guinot Biological Peel.
There are 3 types of common ingredients including Bromelain (pineapple), Papain (papaya) and Pumpkin enzyme.
An important note to remember is not to exfoliate more than twice a month and ideally follow suit with a mask to shrink the pores to prevent whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. Do consider rotating a few masks including hydrating, firming, calming and purifying depending on skin condition. Of course, if budget permitting, it would be good to have radiance and brightening on days you wish to show off your good skin further.
