Since becoming a professional beautician 5 years ago, I come into contact with more than 100 clients a month at my boutique facial salon.
It intrigues me to find out from those who have maintained their youthful skin well and thus looking years younger than their actual age. It also intrigues me to find out why some skin is so dehydrated when obviously they are blessed with good genes to start with.
Good Skincare Practices:
- Use of Facial Oil (Essential Oil) as night care
- Have a set of complete daily skincare routine
- Do not skip Toner
- Love to use Essence or Ampoule
- Never goes anywhere without Sun Protection
Bad Skincare Practices:
- Random Skincare practice
- Use DIY homemade recipes including lemon as whitening agent
- Apply homemade mask made with Honey and egg white
- Use cucumber or teabags on eye area
- Lack of Sun Protection
The Verdict:
DIY Homemade Skincare should not be your skincare routine. It makes the skin feel extremely dehydrated leading to dull skin, fine lines on face and eye area, acne-prone and pigmentation-prone skin.
To put it in perspective, 1 micron = 1/1000 millimeter and the diameter of human hair is 80 to 100 microns. Skin pore size is 50 microns. As most of our own blended homemade products cannot be in micro molecule sized, not to mention nano molecules, they will not be able to penetrate the skin well.
On the contrary, these products, laden with bacteria (especially if we decide to make in batches for storage), and they are very dehydrating.
It is better to have a proper skincare routine in the morning/night. Whilst many argue that the commercial products are laden with chemicals, preservatives and overly priced, there are many options out there which is all natural. 2 of the brands which I highly recommend for natural conscious consumers are Babor (No.1 in Germany) and Guinot (No. 1 in France. Paraben free, chemical free, non-GMO, not tested on animals and non-comedogenic.
